Dividend Calendar FAQs

What is an ex-dividend date and why is it important?

The ex-dividend date is the cut-off date to be eligible for the next dividend payment. If you buy shares on or after the ex-dividend date, you will NOT receive the upcoming dividend. To receive a dividend, you must own the shares before the ex-dividend date. In New Zealand, you typically need to buy shares at least 2 business days before the ex-dividend date due to the T+2 settlement period.

How many NZ companies pay dividends?

Over 150 companies listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX) pay regular dividends. This includes major companies across sectors like banking (ANZ, Westpac), utilities (Contact Energy, Mercury NZ), telecommunications (Spark), and retail (The Warehouse Group). Our calendar tracks all upcoming dividend payments from these companies.

When do most NZ companies pay dividends?

Most NZ companies pay dividends semi-annually (twice per year), typically after their half-year and full-year financial results. Some companies pay quarterly dividends, while others pay annually. Banking and utility companies tend to have the most consistent dividend payment schedules. Check our calendar to see specific payment frequencies for each company.

How do I calculate how much dividend I will receive?

To calculate your dividend payment: Dividend Amount × Number of Shares = Total Payment. For example, if you own 1,000 shares of Spark NZ and they declare a $0.125 dividend per share, you will receive $125 (before tax). Use our dividend calculator for detailed calculations including tax and imputation credits.

What are imputation credits and how do they work?

Imputation credits are tax credits attached to dividends paid by NZ companies. They represent company tax already paid on the distributed profits. If you're a NZ tax resident, you can use imputation credits to reduce your personal tax liability or receive a refund. For example, if a company pays a $1.00 dividend with 28 cents imputation credit, and your tax rate is 33%, you only pay an additional 5 cents in tax (33 cents total tax minus 28 cents credit). Learn more in our imputation credits guide.
